First home match of the season, a friendly against Division 3 West C side Furnace United, was evenly contested in the early stages and it was not until the twentieth minute that the opening score was registered, a well worked try in the corner for Furnace following some good work by the visitors backs. St Clears hit back within five minutes and winger Jonathan Gosling recorded the first try of the season, converted by full back Geraint Jones. Shortly before half time, slightly against the run of play, outside half Shane Morgan crossed for the second try following a charged down kick. The successful conversion again by Geraint Jones produced a half time score of 14 points to 5.
Five minutes into the second half, with the home side one man down following a yellow card for Matthew Owens, the visitors reduced the arrears with a similar try to their first, for their inside centre, but the missed conversion left Saints with a narrow lead of four points.
Another fortuitous charge down for Shane Morgan allowed a simple touch down under the posts and an easy conversion for Geraint Jones relieved the pressure somewhat, at a time when Furnace were beginning to enjoy the ascendancy up front with a strong performance from their forwards producing some issues for the home side.
The return to a full side with the return of Matthew Owens and some changes to the forwards stabilised the balance of play and the home side started to gain the upper hand with some scintillating play from the backs with Matthew Lewis and Liam Price outstanding. One breathtaking run from deep in defence by the former allowed the latter to cross for the simplest of touch downs with another conversion by Geraint Jones producing some breathing side for the home side with the score at 28 points to 10.
There then followed the best period of play for Saints who dominated the last twenty minutes with an impressive display of open running rugby, recording two more tries from Liam Price and Dafydd Page, with a final conversion from the touchline for LIam Price to round off his fine afternoon and produce a final score of forty points to ten.
Scorers:
Tries Jonathan Gosling, Shane Morgan 2, Liam Price 2, Dafydd Page
Conversions Geraint Jones 4, Liam Price
