Another ‘must win’ game for Saints against the bottom side in the division but one who had already inflicted a painful defeat earlier in the season in a very tight encounter, with Saints recording the only try of the game but losing out to the accurate kicking of Llanybydder’s outside half, Steffan Richards, who notched four successful penalties to close out a 12 – 8 victory.

Suffice it to say, in short, it was a continuation of the ‘war of attrition’ pattern established in the first game, the only difference being honours shared on this occasion with St Clears unable to break down a very solid defence and turn their territorial advantage into more points.

A converted try in each half, the first for the visitors number 8, Ricky Davies converted by Steff Richards after thirty minutes and the equaliser for Saints with fifteen minutes remaining, was the sum total of all the efforts by both sides despite outstanding performance from both packs and in truth it was mistakes, in the very difficult conditions, that led to both the tries and the failure by the home side to convert a number of good try scoring opportunities.

One significant and outstanding moment in the game, however, amongst all the valiant but ultimately futile efforts was an outstanding conversion from Saints number 10 Jake Philpin, stepping up to convert Dafydd Walters’s charge down try with time running out, when from a very wide angle some distance out, mastering a very strong crosswind at that stage, he managed to slot home an extraordinary kick which according to pitch side comments moved thirty yards in flight but sailed home ‘right in the middle’. Without that effort Saints would have found themselves reflecting once again on ‘another one that got away’ and a second even more painful defeat!!
