St Clears opened proceedings, with the forecast good weather very reluctant to make an appearance and light rain with a very heavy pitch the format yet again in another ‘must win’ game.

There was nothing to choose between the sides in the opening exchanges and chances were few and far between in a very tight opening period as they both sought to gain the upper hand in the difficult conditions.

Adam Phillips went close with a penalty kick but an enterprising cross field kick from Shane Morgan broke the deadlock after twenty minutes when Captain Mathew Lewis, showing good football skills to control the ball, touched down in the corner. An excellent kick from Adam Phillips provided the extras and seven points to nil a good start to the Saints search for the essential win.

Indiscipline proved to be Saints undoing however and a number of penalties led to a successful kick in front of the posts for Amman’s outside half to reduce the arrears just before half time.

The heavy going led to lots of handling errors and good rugby was difficult with many interruptions disrupting proceedings and neither side able to establish any superiority, although the visitors’ backs were handling the conditions better and looking dangerous in the early stages of the second half.

A line out for the home side, who had performed well throughout in that phase, led to what looked likely to be the decisive score for Saints number 8, Dafydd Page (pictured) when he crashed over for a try in the corner to increase the lead to nine points.

Amman refused to be beaten however and from that point on they laid siege to the home side, who were forced to defend as if their lives depended on it. A successful penalty with fifteen minutes remaining gave even more momentum to the visitors’ efforts but despite wave after wave of attacks, with a try looking more and more likely, heroic defence from Saints resisted all their efforts and a remarkable result, producing the vital victory, was their just deserts, although credit to both sides for producing a really competitive game in the conditions, thoroughly enjoyed by all present with a final score of 12 points to 6.
