Away to Pontarddulais 23-03-2019

Back to league action after the six nations break with Saints struggling to field a side thanks to 16 absences from the squad and only eighteen available to play! After ten minutes those who could make it, must have wondered what they had let themselves in for with two tries scored in similar circumstances for left wing Scott Simons, one a text book cross field kick from outside half Aled Stone measured to the inch over the despairing fingertips of the visitor’s defender and the other, in virtually the same place in the corner following some excellent play from Pont’s backs, leaving the Saints defence in tatters. One conversion from the boot of Stone and Saints were twelve points in arrears almost before touching the ball.

There was no let up and although Saints did rally to offer some resistance, within ten minutes yet another try in the same place in the left hand corner together with an excellent conversion from Stone added more punishment to increase the lead to 19 points without reply.

Still the relentless tide continued and five minutes later yet another score, in the other corner this time with another good conversion from Stone and the arrears increased to an overwhelming 26 points with just over half an hour completed.

Ten minutes later and the fifth try from number 6 Craig Davies and with another conversion and the score at 33 points to nil, the distinct probability of a rout to follow.

With the last play of the first half however with Saints at last stepping up to the plate, Tom Rees, playing out of position in the second row, touched down for a well deserved try to get some points on the board and a good conversion from Rhodri Jones produced a slightly less depressing score of 33 points to 7 at the break.

Continuing the improvement shown towards the end of the first half a revitalised St Clears side appeared after the resumption and within three minutes flanker Ryan Jeremias finished some impressive forward pressure to score under the posts, converted by Owain Davies.

With signs of a possible turn round in the expected outcome the visitors pushed home their advantage and were unlucky not to turn their pressure into points when, against the run of play, a huge lucky bounce gifted another score to Scott Simons and took some of the sting out of the visitor’s efforts restoring the comfortable lead to 24 points.

Saints did not give up however and fought hard looking for, at least, the try bonus point with Tom Rees scoring his second try with 15 minutes remaining but despite finishing the half looking more likely to score they were unable to change the outcome and the final score of 38 points to 19.
