The visitors expectations, it is fair to say, were not high, but buoyed by last week's excellent result against St Davids, it was hoped that a 'fire damage' result would have been achieved at high flying Aberaeron.
At half time, 21 to nil was not unacceptable in the circumstances, despite two tries in the last ten minutes prior to the break, but five minutes after the restart, complete lack of concentration from the entire St Clears defence allowed the home side's outside centre to score almost unopposed from half way, dancing through countless misstackles before scoring under the posts. A rare conversion, in diifficult windy conditions, effectively settled matters and a converted try from Aled Mason, for the visitors, (pictured) only served to stabilise proceedings at a sensible level of 28 points to seven with thirty minutes remaining to full time.
It was only thanks to unnecessary refereeing interventions and misguided official interpretations that a final score of 57 points to 7 was achieved ultimately, with three tries resulting from ten mintues extra time added inexplicably.
The final score however in no way reflected the game's overall performance levels and both sides would probably have happily settled for the scoreline prior to the referee's additional playing time when 40 points to seven reflected a much fairer assessment of the game as a whole.
