Away to Burry Port 16/02/2019

Not the best venue on the circuit on a misty, murky day with some light rain – not the best setting for another challenging afternoon with a few regulars missing, not helped by Saints usual slow start, resulting in a try after five minutes for the home side. An excellent conversion from outside half Stefan Powell and the visitors in arrears before they had broken sweat!

Saints gradually countered Port’s opening surges and with only one narrowly missed penalty kick from captain Adam Phillips, half time was reached without any further score with the score at seven points to nil.

Ten minutes into the second half in what was becoming a very tight encounter Burry Port’s Powell slotted home an easy penalty to push the home side further ahead but five minutes later Saints lively winger Will Davies finished off an excellent move with a try in the corner followed by a conversion from captain Phillips to reduce the gap to three points.

Both sides had chances to score and with very little to choose between the two sides and the clock running down, an attacking move from the visitors broke down leading to a breakaway try for the home side with a successful conversion to break the deadlock.

Saints never recovered from this setback and in a surprising amount of added time, three further similar breakaway tries resulted in ten minutes with Saints still pushing for a score, leaving little in defence or in reserve, to produce a result of 36 points to 7 which flattered the home side and was yet another cruel undeserved result for what was ironically an improved performance from the visiting team.
