With hopes high following good recent performances and a strong side available including the return of stalwart Mike Georgiau after a long absence, it was ironic that the first move of the match resulted in a bad facial injury for Mike which clearly affected his performance and rather set the tone for the match.

Despite plenty of action with both sides competing well and Saints pressing for the first score an over adventurous pass after ten minutes produced a loose ball which was fly kicked fifty yards by the visitors to open the scoring. An easy conversion for fly half Mike Sauro and Pontyberem were seven points to the good with Saints once again left rueing their misfortune!

Dan Griffiths reduced the arrears with a penalty but with Ponty’s backs displaying some excellent fast flowing skills the lead was increased with a try in the corner for outside centre Aled Rees with Sauro adding the extras.

Two further penalties increased the lead and at half time the visitors were good value for the 20 points to 3 lead.

Saints fought hard to recover after the restart but found it difficult to produce any meaningful try scoring opportunities against a well drilled visitor’s defence. Two injuries midway through the half, first Dan Griffiths stretchered off and then Dafydd Walters assisted off and with Mike Georgiau having eventually succumbed to his earlier knock sealed the afternoon’s woes and two further tries simply added salt to the wounds to produce the final score of 34 points to three.
