Away to Tycroes 12/01/2019

The visitor’s hopes of a flying start to create some momentum and gain the upper hand were dashed within two minutes of the start when first a penalty for offside, straight from the start was awarded to Tycroes and although the relatively easy kick was surprisingly missed, almost immediately after the restart a try for centre Elgan Griffiths resulted, when the visitor’s defence was breached far too easily and this time no mistake with the kick for scrum half Lee Evans to put the home side seven points to the good.

Full back James Davies hit back with a successful penalty five minutes later but much against the run of play with the visitors under the cosh, not helping themselves by giving away for too many penalties, which with one exception fortunately for them, largely went unpunished!

Dafydd Walters was yellow carded fifteen minutes into the game and although the penalty following the infringement was missed, a breakaway try resulted from an interception on halfway immediately afterwards, allowing Lee Evans to score in the corner and although he was again unsuccessful with his attempted conversion at 15 points to 3 the outlook was looking bleak for the visitors with the home side well on top.

The return to a full side with the return of Walters triggered a recovery however and on half an hour, following some much improved rugby, Saints hit back and outside centre Jac Howells, making his first appearance for the Seniors having progressed through the Juniors ranks to Youth captain, finished off some excellent work from the backs with his first try in Senior rugby (pictured), duly converted by fullback Davies. Not satisfied with that however Howells then recorded his second try ten minutes later to level the scores at fifteen points apiece at half time.

Tit for tat, end to end was the format after the restart with neither side able to register the telling score although a penalty each went begging before Lee Evans ended the stalemate with his second try of the match after fifteen minutes of the half to put Tycroes five points ahead.

James Davies cut the arrears to two points with a penalty kick ten minutes later and with tensions beginning to boil over, two yellows for both hookers were followed by a red for the visitors, Will Davies, before the match was effectively settled, fittingly perhaps, with a final penalty for the home side on the stroke of full time to produce the final score of 23 points to 18 in favour of Tycroes.
